The spillway discharge of flood at one of the two common reservoirs for the Telugu States – Nagarjunasagar project – commenced early this season on Tuesday (July 29, 2025), eight days in advance compared to last year. The water was released in July after 18 years. Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy performed ‘pooja’ before the lifting of crest gates.

A total of 14 crest gates were lifted for 5 feet height each around 12.30 pm to allow discharge of nearly 1.1 lakh cusecs of water into the river course. In-charge Minister for combined Nalgonda district Adluri Laxman Kumar, local (Nagarjunasagar) MLA K. Jayaveer Reddy, Miryalguda MLA B. Laxma Reddy, MLC K. Shankar Naik, project engineers and others too performed pooja by offering flowers and other auspicious material to the water.
Later, the discharge was increased to 1.57 lakh cusecs after 2 p.m. by lifting another six crest gates for the same height. The spillway discharge of flood was further increased to 2.04 lakh cusecs after 3 pm by lifting six more gates for 5 ft height each. At 4 p.m., the project was getting an inflow of about 2.56 lakh cusecs flood and the outflow was over 2.47 lakh cusecs including water drawals for different canal systems.

Project’s ayacut 10.38 lakh acres in Telangana
Speaking after the water release, Mr. Uttam Reddy said that the Congress Government had been standing by the farming community by taking care of their needs and the production of 2.81 crore tonnes of paddy last year was a proof of it. He said that the project has a total ayacut of 22.12 lakh acres with 11.74 lakh acres (all in Andhra Pradesh) under the Right Canal and 10.38 lakh acres under the Left Canal including 6.3 lakh acres in Telangana.
District-wise ayacut
District-wise, the ayacut in Telangana is 1.46 lakh acres in Nalgonda, 2.3 lakh acres in Suryapet and 2.54 lakh acres in Khammam district. The Left Canal runs for 112.02 km in Telangana territory. Besides, seven units of 100 megawatt each of the main power house and two units of 30 MW each on the Left Canal were generating power too.
Further, the Irrigation Minister said that the government had released water to the Left Canal much before the schedule this year . Officials of the project said that Andhra Pradesh too had started drawing water from the Right Canal from July 23.
