A multi-agency rescue operation was launched on Thursday night to rescue a boy who fell into an open sewer in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj.

Efforts by personnel from Delhi Police, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Delhi Fire Services, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were under way at the time of going to press.

The sewer is managed by the MCD, said an official, adding that the identity of the minor, who fell into an open sewer in Rajokri village around 1.24 p.m., and that of his parents were yet to be ascertained.

The police received a PCR from an area resident who was alerted by children who had witnessed the incident, said an officer. He added, “Acting swiftly, a team was rushed to the location, and multiple agencies were mobilised for coordinated rescue efforts. A bulldozer was deployed to remove waste and open up the sewer line. Subsequently, a fire tender with four personnel arrived at the spot.”

A DDMA team, including an officer and three trained divers, also joined the operation. Four sanitation workers were pressed into service, said the MCD.
