Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police G. Chandeesh here on Tuesday handed over road safety equipment to the tune of ₹6.4 lakh to the district police force.
The equipment which was bought under the road safety fund included 100 rechargeable baton lights that glow at night, 100 reflective jackets, 50 wheel lockers, three breath analysers, seven solar based display boards, 20 rolls of reflective stickers, 100 traffic cones, and 30 reflective train raincoats.
Mr. Chandeesh, speaking there, said that through a joint initiative between the Police Department and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), around 20 blinker light posts have been installed at accident prone spots along the National Highway from Ramanathapuram to Rameswaram to reduce night time accidents.
Greeting the public, police and public sector organisations for their joint efforts to reduce road accidents, he said the number of vehicle accidents this year has decreased by 35% compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, from January to July this year, the district has ranked second in the State in reducing fatalities caused by road accidents, he added.
He instructed the police officials to carry on the work of creating road safety awareness programmes among students in schools and colleges.
