Coimbatore Corporation has yet to receive funding from the State government for a proposal submitted earlier this year, in February, seeking ₹23 crore. This proposal aims to install new streetlights and replace the existing non-functional or low-illumination streetlights throughout the city.
The plan comes as a response to several complaints received regarding poor street lighting, which has been attributed to ageing infrastructure and a reduction in illumination levels in various areas. The project includes the installation of new streetlights complete with poles, as well as the replacement of old streetlights, roads that have been newly laid or expanded recently.
At present, Coimbatore has an estimated 1,03,000 streetlights installed across the city. A Corporation official stated, “We are awaiting the allocation of funds from the State government. Once the funding is approved, we will commence the installation work without delay.”
In order to improve maintenance and minimise complaints that arose due to having a single contractor, the Corporation has awarded tenders on a zone-wise basis. Despite this, the Corporation continues to face challenges in replacing streetlights, as a significant number of units still require attention.
The official added, “We are currently utilising our own funds to replace lights wherever necessary. According to the proposal, there are 5,467 new lights with poles to be installed, along with the replacement of old units across the city.”
