A six-year-old boy died after being mauled by a sloth bear at Valparai in Coimbatore district on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Noorul Islam, son of a migrant worker from Assam.
The Forest Department said that the boy’s parents were employed in a tea estate at Waterfall, Valparai. The boy went to a shop around 200 meters off the line houses of estate workers at 5.30 p.m. on Monday. As he did not return home by 6 p.m., his parents searched for him and found his body around 500 meters from the shop in bushes.
Officials with the Forest Department said that the injuries on the body appeared as if the boy was attacked by a sloth bear.
The body has been shifted to Government Hospital at Valparai. The post-mortem examination will be performed on Tuesday.
