An armed man barged into a ladies Paying Guest accommodation situated at Judicial layout in Yelahanka, and sexually harassed a 30-year-old Assistant Engineer at knife point and escaped after robbing her two phones on Monday (August 11) afternoon.

On the day of the incident, the victim returned from work and went up to her room situated on the third floor. She heard a knock on the door around 3 p.m. and opened the door, assuming that it could be the staff.

The accused barged in, overpowered her and placed a knife at her neck demanding money and the gold bangles she was wearing. He forcibly tried to remove the bangles and sexually harassed her.

The victim told him that the money was in the vanity bag kept on the bed. By the time he went to grab the bag, the victim ran into the washroom and locked it from inside, raising an alarm for help.

Sensing trouble, the accused grabbed two mobile phones, worth ₹75,000, lying on the bed and escaped. After waiting for sometime, the victim came out of the room and narrated the incident to her fellow PG mates before alerting the police.

The police rushed to the spot and conducted investigations, before registering a case against unknown person under Section 311 (robbery or dacoity when accompanied by an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of BNS for further investigation.

The police are verifying the CCTV footage and questioning the PG staff about the security and safety measures they have as per the rules.

Safety concerns

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of people living in PG accommodations in and around the city.

On August 2, the Soladevanahalli police had arrested a PG owner, Ashraf, for allegedly abducting and raping a student on the pretext of taking her out for dinner.
