With the State government banning the use of plastic on the premises of temples coming under the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department from August 15, a plastic ban awareness programme was organised by the department on Sunday.

Inaugurating the event at Dodda Ganapathi Temple in Basavanagudi, Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that from August 15, the use of all kinds of plastic had been banned in temples under the department.

“To ensure compliance, a project management unit (PMU) has been constituted. In the first phase, 25 temples have been identified for the installation of solid and liquid waste management units, with experts engaged to oversee scientific waste disposal,” Mr. Reddy said.

He further added that temple authorities have been directed to impose fines on those using plastic items. “This is aimed at ensuring environmental cleanliness,” Mr. Reddy said.

Earlier, while announcing the order, Mr. Reddy had said that it would be implemented in 34,505 temples.
