Police arrested three youths on charges of committing a string of highway robberies targeting elderly commuters and recovered stolen property worth ₹2 lakh in the Nagari subdivision, on Monday.
Speaking to the media here, Superintendent of Police (SP) Manikanta Chandolu said that after a string of incidents in the Nagari subdivision, a special party was formed with the area police to apprehend the culprits. A special party intercepted three suspects near Keelapattu Anjaneya Swamy temple at the outskirts of Nagari town on the Tirupati-Chennai National Highway.
The arrested were identified as P. Satish (19), a known offender from Nagari Dalitwada with nine previous cases, R. Shankar alias Ajith (20) of Velavadi, and M.S. Vijay Kumar (20) of Karakantapuram locality around Nagari. Satish was found to be the one leading the gang, changing associates for each offence to avoid detection. A preliminary inquiry revealed the involvement of the trio in multiple cases, including a burglary in Nagari, where laptops, household goods, and gold were stolen. The other offences include a temple hundi theft, robbery of a two-wheeler worth ₹90,000 and several assaults on elderly travellers.
Police recovered ₹1.37 lakh in cash, a motorcycle, a laptop, household items, and a mobile phone. The arrested were sent for remand at Chittoor sub-jail.
