Dr. Ganga Prasad Prasain, who retired as Vice Chancellor of Tripura University on August 16, will continue to hold the post till the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. There were instances in the past that a pro-V-C or senior most professor held the position as an interim arrangement, but the Registrar of the university, Dr Deepak Sharma, issued a notification confirming Dr. Prasain’s extension.

Though the notification is dated August 16, it was made public only yesterday. The university, which is the only central university in the state, has not given any clarification over the delayed process.

Dr. Prasain completed five years as V-C and his tenure ended on August 16. Prior to holding the position, he worked as Dean, School of Social Sciences and Professor of Commerce at Manipur Central University, Imphal.

Informed sources at the university on Monday said there had not been any indication of the immediate appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. They said a search committee has not been formed and it is likely that Dr. Prasain will continue to hold the position till he attains 65 years of age as per the UGC guidelines.

Dr. Ganga Prasad Prasain had to face a number of controversies during his tenure. The latest was the alleged irregularities in appointment of 30 non-teaching staff at the university.
