With the water level in the Bhavanisagar Dam of Erode district touching 102 feet, surplus water was released into Bhavani River on Tuesday (August 19, 2025).

As of 1 p.m., the water level stood at 102 feet, against the dam’s full reservoir level (FRL) of 105 feet. The inflow was 5,834 cusecs, while storage stood at 30.31 tmc ft, compared to the full capacity of 32.80 tmc ft.

The total discharge was 5,800 cusecs including 2,900 cusecs into the Bhavani River, 2,100 cusecs into the Lower Bhavani Project canal and 800 cusecs into the Arakkankottai and Thadapalli canals.

A Water Resources Department official said that under flood regulation norms, the permissible storage level at Bhavanisagar Dam varies by months: 100 feet in June and July, 102 feet from August to October, and up to 105 feet in November and December. Since the water level reached 102 feet at 11 a.m., surplus water was released. The official added that an advisory has been issued, urging residents in low-lying areas and along riverbanks to remain cautious.
