Since the implementation of the third phase of underground drainage work is progressing at snail’s pace and the public agony due to the damaged roads has become ‘never-ending story’, more than five petitions were submitted by the residents from various areas of the urban civic body to Mayor G. Ramakrishnan on Tuesday seeking early re-laying of damaged roads after giving sewage connections to the houses.
Members of residents’ welfare associations of Thirunagar, Issac Nagar, Kumaresan Nagar and a few more areas submitted separate petitions seeking the early re-laying of the roads damaged in the underground drainage work after giving sewage connections to the houses.
The residents also came down heavily on the Corporation for not expediting the ongoing underground drainage work.
“After being under prolonged execution for more than five months, the underground drainage work was completed two months ago in our area. But the Corporation is in no mood to re-lay the damaged roads. We can’t even step-out of our houses and are witnessing accidents involving bikes everyday. Even an ambulance or a fire tender cannot enter our area for rescue operation in case of any emergency due to these gravely damaged roads,” said P. Vijayakumar, president of Issac Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association.
On behalf of the residents of Tamil Nadu Housing Board, Jeba Garden Area and Perumalpuram Extension a petition was submitted to the Mayor seeking immediate intervention to check stray dog menace. Secretary of Jeba Garden Residents’ Welfare Association A. Thukkamuthu submitted a petition saying that the inhabitants of these places were living in fear as stray dogs were posing extreme threat to the residents, especially the elderly people going for walk, children going to school and the women going to nearby shops.
“Besides attacking the residents, the saliva left on the entrance of the houses where stray dogs may cause serious infections in humans. The residents suffer from sleepless nights due to the frequent fights among the stray dogs and the howling. Since the Supreme Court has directed the removal of uncared street dogs to the shelters, the Tirunelveli Corporation should take immediate steps to implement this instruction,” Mr. Thukkamuthu, an advocate, said.
Councillor of ward 51 D. Sahaya Juliet Mary submitted a petition seeking the early commissioning of the ground-level sump at Thirunagar in her ward.
Residents of Tuckerammalpuram Residents’ Welfare Association submitted a petition seeking the Corporation’s intervention to ensure supply of drinking water to the houses in the ‘elevated areas’ of their colony.
