The Murasoli Maran Park in Perambur is set for a major makeover, with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) sanctioning ₹9.52 crore to redevelop its northern side in just six months. The work has been scheduled for completion within six months of the site being handed over to a private firm for redevelopment.

The park covers 8,473 square metres and is split into two sections. The northern side, coming under Ward 71 of Thiru. Vi. Ka Nagar Zone, has been taken up by the CMDA for improvement.

The southern side, under Ward 74, where Chennai Mayor R. Priya is the councillor, was taken up in October 2024 for development as a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) park.

A document shared by the CMDA stated that the redevelopment is designed with multiple recreational features, landscaped green areas and inclusive facilities. The plan provides for meditation and yoga zones, walking tracks, ornamental fountains, badminton courts, lawns, tree plantations, play areas and monumental sculptures. Pathways, horticultural works and boundary structures are also included.

Further, a memorial pillar to mark former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s centenary year is to be set up at the northern section of the Perambur Murasoli Maran Park.

STEM park

GCC is working to convert the south side of the Murasoli Maran Park to a STEM park at an estimated cost of about ₹5 crore. An official in the civic body said that the work was progressing fast and was expected to be completed soon.

C. Raghukumar of the Perambur Neighbourhood Forum said several trees planted earlier in Murasoli Maran Park and near Perambur Railway Station had been cut, though a few survived after a local volunteer, Goverdhan, watered them even as borewells failed. He said efforts to install CCTV cameras in the park had also not materialised. The official with GCC said this will be checked upon.
