A farmer from Adahallatti village near Chikkodi in Belagavi district Bheemashankar Nayak was forced to carry his wife on his shoulder as an ambulance could not reach his house on Saturday due to poor road condition.
The farmer’s wife, Shilpa Nayak, was due for delivery. He called the 108 ambulance helpline. The driver drove up to the village but said the ambulance cannot reach his house as it was in a remote area.
By that time, Shilpa was delivered of a baby.
With the help of his relatives, Bheemashankar Nayak then carried the woman and the newborn on their shoulders to reach the ambulance.
She was admitted to hospital in Chikkodi. Mother and her newborn are doing well.
Bheemashankar Nayak lives in the Nayakwasti area on the outskirts of the village.
The area is not served by good roads. The mud-covered roads leading to the area are slushy and not fit for vehicle movement, a panchayat raj officer said.
