About five houses near Nagamalai Pudukkottai here were damaged owing to heavy rain that lashed several parts of Madurai on Saturday.
The incident was learned to have happened due to the gushing wind that accompanied the heavy rain.
K. Suseela, one of the residents of the damaged houses, said that though it was raining for more than an hour before the incident, the sudden wind that blew at around 4.50 p.m. threw away their house’s cement roof sheets instantly.
“As the wind was blowing at a very high speed, I tried to close the door, but the wind pushed me behind and threw away the roof violently,” she added.
As she and her 16-year-old son were in the house, both rushed out to a safe shelter to protect themselves.
“After my husband and other son arrived, we secured all our valuables and went to our mother-in-law’s house,” she recalled.
K. Panjavarnam, another affected resident, said that two families residing in two of the damaged houses for rent vacated the dwellings overnight.
“But the other two families who owned the houses took essential belongings and sought refuge in their relatives’ houses nearby,” she added.
As they had no roof over their houses, they could not stay there until the renovation works were completed, she noted.
“Due to the damage the building has already suffered we were advised to build a concrete roof to prevent future accidents,” she stated.
Ms. Panjavarnam said that a district administration staff visited the houses and took note of the damage.
Considering the damage due to a natural calamity, the State government should support them in renovating their houses, the residents demanded.
On Sunday too, heavy downpour accompanied by strong wind was observed in several parts of city and rural areas.
