The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Monday announced a hike in ticket prices. The higher fares will also be applicable on Sundays and national holidays.

The hike will range from ₹1 to ₹4 based on the distance, the DMRC said in a statement. It added that the rates for the Airport Express Line have also been increased up to ₹5.

Calling the hike “minimal”, the DMRC said it was necessary to balance the “rising operational expenses”.

‘Losses during COVID-19’

“The fares have been increased due to the losses suffered during COVID-19, repayment commitments to the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the need for midlife refurbishment of trains, upkeep of infrastructure and payment of salaries,” said an official.

The official added that a loss (before tax) of ₹1,781.69 crore in 2023-24 and projected losses of around ₹1,598 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal have contributed to the decision.

The metro fares were last revised eight years ago.

Revised rates

According to the new structure, the minimum fare has increased from ₹10 to ₹11 for journeys of up to 2 km, while the maximum fare for trips beyond 32 km has gone up by ₹4 from ₹60 to ₹64. For the distance of 12 to 21 km, fares now stand at ₹43, compared to ₹40 previously, and for travel distance between 21 km and 32 km, the fare is up from from ₹50 to ₹54.

On Sundays and national holidays, journeys exceeding 32 km will cost ₹54 instead of ₹50, while travel within the 12 to 21 km range has been revised from ₹30 to ₹32, according to the statement.
