Unprecedented rains lashed Kamareddy district and its rural parts on Wednesday (August 27, 2025). The district headquarters is still under a sheet of water. Several colonies in the town are submerged in the flood water forcing the residents to vacate their houses and reach safer places.
Three colonies – GR Colony, Teachers Colony, Housing Board Colony – and Sarampally ST Residential School in Kamareddy Town bore the brunt of the ravaging rain water as in less than two hours, water level touched two-floors catching the residents unawares.
A Government school teacher recalled the harrowing experience of the rain fury. “From 10 am onwards of Wednesday, the water level suddenly began to rise. And in no time, it started to enter our houses. In two hours, two floors went under flood water and we had to escape to the nearby third floor building to save ourselves. I lost every thing. I shoved personal documents in a suitcase before leaving the house in Kamareddy Town,” he said.
A councillor of Kamareddy Municipality, Avadhuta, narrated how the unprecedented rain caused havoc in and around the town. “Colonies everywhere were submerged. Nalas have been blocked due to encroachments, which added to the woes of the GB Colony and Housing Board Colony residents,” he said.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams worked over time to rescue people from the marooned areas. Rescue teams and police personnel from Kamareddy managed to reach a shed near an old age home in Ugrawai village and rescued 50 people, who took shelter there. Videos of the daring rescue act saw police personnel wading through surging waters and bringing the people one after the another.
The devastating affect of the rains washed away the Kamareddy-Bibipet main road . Water from the overflowing Bibipet irrigation tank damaged the bridge bringing vehicular traffic to a halt.
Visuals on the social media showed rural areas of Kamareddy district badly affected by the rains. Rajampet village and Bhikanoor in Kamareddy district were one of the worst affected areas. Two big irrigation tanks on the village outskirts overflowed flooding the houses. Water from the Bhikanoor irrigation tank flooded the main road.
The situation turned even more grim as the arterial NH-44 from Hyderabad to Nagpur and beyond suffered damage near Jangampally as the road caved in due to flood waters. Nizamabad Commissioner of Police P. Sai Chaitanya and Kamareddy Superintendent of Police M. Rajesh Chandra and Nizamabad Additional DCP (Admin) Baswa Reddy camped on the NH-44 monitoring the situation. Vehicular traffic was held up for several hours on both the sides.
In the meantime, Ramadugu project in Dharpally mandal of Nizamabad district is overflowing. The project was receiving inflow of 11,609 cusecs and same was let out. In Gadkol village of the district, local stream was in spate causing inundation of houses in the village.
