V. Ajaya Babu rode on his superior snatch performance to beat Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat by two kg and claim his second consecutive gold medal in the Commonwealth weightlifting championships at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Naranpura, here on Thursday.

Ajaya overcame a failed opening attempt to log 152kg in his final snatch effort and establish a two-kg lead over Hidayat before the break. After Hidayat challenged Ajaya in clean and jerk, both ended up recording an identical 183kg and the Indian claimed the top honour and a place in the Commonwealth Games with three records.

Bedabrat Bharali performed superbly to aggregate 326kg and clinch the men’s 79kg junior title. Juhitha Guna (168kg) won the women’s 69kg youth crown.

The results: Senior: Men: 79kg: 1. V. Ajaya Babu snatch 152kg, clean and jerk 183kg, total 335kg, 2. Erry Hidayat (Mas) 150kg, 183kg, 333kg, 3. Adedapo Poadeji (Ngr) 141kg, 165kg, 306kg.

Women: 69kg: 1. Islamiyat Yusuf (Ngr) 105kg, 131kg, 236kg, 2. Olivia Selemaia (Nzl) 100kg, 123kg, 223kg, 3. Harjinder Kaur 99kg, 123kg, 222kg; 77kg: 1. Sarah Matthew (Ngr) 108kg, 128kg, 236kg, 2. Seine Stowers (Sam) 102kg, 127kg, 229kg, 3. Rosalie Dumas (Can) 101kg, 123kg, 224kg, 8. Harmanpreet Kaur 89kg, 116kg, 205kg.
