A grade sub-inspector of Maradu police station was reportedly caught red-handed by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) on Tuesday (September 2) while allegedly accepting ₹ 10,000 as a bribe for releasing a vehicle seized as part of the probe into an accident case, according to a release.

K. Gopakumar was nabbed by VACB officials as they set a trap after a native of Pallikkara, Ernakulam, filed a complaint. The complainant owns the lorry, which was seized following an accident near the Vyttila hub on August 25. The lorry had rammed a car and bike as well as a compound wall after the driver suffered a heart attack. He was hospitalised and in a coma since then.

According to VACB, Mr. Gopakumar sought ₹ 10,000 from the complainant to release his vehicle when he was summoned to the station on August 27. Though the complainant explained his financial struggles, the police official reportedly turned him away, asking him to return to the station with the amount on Tuesday afternoon. Following this, the complainant approached DySP, VACB, Ernakulam, and filed a complaint. The VACB officials arrested Mr. Gopakumar while allegedly accepting the amount from the complainant at the police station. He will be produced before the VACB court in Muvattupuzha, the communication said.
