The Tamil Nadu Hotel Owners Association on Wednesday (September 4, 2025) announced a boycott of mineral water and beverage products manufactured by United States-based companies, as well as a plan to log out of food delivery apps, such as Swiggy and Zomato, and instead migrate to a home-grown app.
Association president M. Venkadasubbu told reporters that the boycott of U.S.-manufactured beverages was to protest the 50% tariff recently imposed by the Trump administration on Indian exports. Hotels, instead, have decided to encourage Indian products, and prioritise selling them. The date from which the goods would be boycotted will be announced shortly, he added.
‘Overcharging customers’
Mr. Venkadasubbu also said that popular Indian food delivery apps that have allegedly been overcharging customers and hoteliers will be de-linked by hotels, and that they would migrate to the home-grown Zaaroz app soon. Pilot programmes are already under way in Cuddalore and Namakkal, he added.
