Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday (September 3, 2025) unveiled tax cuts for hundreds of consumer items – from soap to cars – in the biggest overhaul of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), set to take effect from September 22.
Briefing reporters after a marathon daylong GST Council meeting, Ms. Sitharaman said all decisions were taken unanimously, with no state registering any disagreement.
The panel approved simplifying the GST structure from the current four slabs — 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% — to two rates: 5% and 18%. A special 40% slab will apply to a select few items such as high-end cars, tobacco and cigarettes.
The revised rates for all products, except gutkha, tobacco, tobacco products and cigarettes, will come into effect on September 22, 2025.
