Three universities in the Capital secured positions in the top five in the higher education rankings announced by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on Thursday. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) retained its second spot, while Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) slipped one spot to fourth position. Delhi University (DU) moved up from sixth position to fifth this year.

In the best college category, the top five are from DU, with Hindu College occupying the top position, followed by Miranda House, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College, and St. Stephen’s College.

The NIRF rankings, released by the Ministry of Education, were based on parameters such as teaching and learning resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. Institutes were ranked across 17 categories this year.

DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said the university has achieved its best performance since the rankings were introduced. The V-C said that DU not only improved its overall rankings, but the university’s position in research also moved up from 14th to 12th, with only IITs and research institutes ranked above it.

“In the college category, DU has once again dominated the national scene. All the top five colleges in India belong to DU, while 10 of the top 20 colleges are its constituents, reflecting the university’s unmatched strength in undergraduate education,” Mr. Singh said.

JMI Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif said it was a matter of great honour that the university JMI has retained its position among the top five of the country and has been ranked 13th in the ‘overall category’. Mr. Asif said he will try to improve the disciplines of engineering, management, and dentistry. “We hope to work on some of the challenges that came in our way so that we can improve our rankings next year and continue to take the 105-year-old institution to newer heights,” Mr. Asif said.

In the ‘overall category’, IIT Delhi found itself in fourth place, AIIMS Delhi in eighth place, JNU in ninth place, Jamia Millia Islamia in thirteenth place and Delhi University in fifteenth place.
