As part of the ‘Model Thamirabarani’ initiative, aimed at clearing the invasive Prosopis Juliflora along the stretch of Thamirabarani river from Srivaikuntam to Alwarthirunagari, Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath on Saturday launched a programme to plant 1,000 palm saplings in Alwarthirunagari region.
Speaking at the event Mr. Elambahavath said that the primary objective of the event was to remove the invasive Prosopis Juliflora, and replace it with palm sapling in the same area, provided by the Grama Udhayam organisation. He added that various efforts have been undertaken with the cooperation of many people, including the use of reclamation machines to level the land and arrangements for watering and planting trees.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, the Collector said the initiative helps protect rivers, preserve waterbodies and promote tree plantation. He lauded the participation of villagers, particularly students in the programme. Emphasising the importance of trees, he noted that in the event of floods, these trees will protect the riverbanks.
