Pappakudi police have arrested a man for attempting to murder a retired transport corporation worker by setting him ablaze.

The police said P. Maharajan, 35, of Idaikal was riding his bike fast when village elders were holding a meeting in Gangai Amman Temple Street on Sunday night. Retired transport worker Ramakrishnan, 66, shouted at Maharajan, and an altercation broke out between them.

After the village elders pacified Mr. Ramakrishnan and Maharajan, the latter left the spot. He returned to the meeting venue soon with petrol in a container. After sprinkling the fuel on Mr. Ramakrishnan and a few others, he set them afire. As Mr. Ramakrishnan suffered extensive burns, the others participating in the meeting thrashed Maharajan.

Mr. Ramakrishnan has been admitted to a private hospital in Tirunelveli. Maharajan is undergoing treatment at Ambasamudram Government Hospital for the injuries he reportedly sustained in the attack.

Pappakudi police have registered a case.
