Followed by streetlights and medians, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has moved to unlock the advertising potential of nearly 3,500 transformer view cutters across the city, an official said. This forms part of the civic body’s Own Source Revenue generation strategy.
Three consultancy projects have been initiated at an estimated cost of ₹59.87 lakh to prepare Detailed Feasibility Reports (DFRs) for the Central, North, and South regions.
A GCC official said the initiative would reduce unauthorised posters on walls and poles, bring uniformity to the appearance of streets, and create a steady revenue stream that could be utilised for civic works such as roads, lighting, and waste management.
In Chennai, there are 3,500 view cutters: 1,400 in the South region and 2,100 in the Central and North regions combined. These will be studied for their potential to generate advertising revenue under a Public-Private Partnership model.
According to the GCC, the consultant engaged to prepare the DFRs will carry out a detailed survey, compile an inventory of view cutters with location and physical details, assess advertising and revenue potential, conduct a market study, recommend a pricing strategy, and develop a financial model with revenue-sharing recommendations.
The DFRs are expected to be completed within two months and will include competitive analysis, pricing strategy, implementation roadmap, and preparation of proposal and legal documents.
