Music streaming giant Spotify announced that it is bringing lossless audio to its premium subscribers, allowing them to enjoy their music at a higher quality.

Spotify’s new Lossless feature will let Premium listeners stream tracks in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, meaning that their music will feel more detailed. Spotify acknowledged that the feature was a highly requested one. The company already enables users to toggle between varying levels of audio quality to save data, with the Lossless feature set to join the list of available options.

Lossless is available on mobile, desktop, and tablet, along with devices that support Spotify Connect.

“The wait is finally over; we’re so excited lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers,” said Gustav Gyllenhammar, VP Subscriptions, Spotify.

“We’ve taken time to build this feature in a way that prioritizes quality, ease of use, and clarity at every step, so you always know what’s happening under the hood. With Lossless, our premium users will now have an even better listening experience,” he added.

In order to make the most of the feature, Spotify recommended streaming music with Wi-Fi using wired headphones or speakers on a non-Bluetooth connection, noting that Bluetooth “doesn’t provide enough bandwidth to transmit lossless audio”.

Spotify’s upcoming Lossless feature will be rolled out through October to more than 50 markets. Meanwhile, premium subscribers in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK have started to get access.

Eligible users can experience Lossless audio by going to the ‘Settings & Privacy’ section in their Spotify app and activating the new feature based on whether they are listening to music over Wi-Fi, with a cellular connection, or by downloading tracks.
