Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph on Monday (June 23, 2025) said the United Democratic Front (UDF) is nearing the anticipated victory margin in Nilambur, where counting trends have indicated a big lead.

He stated that the UDF had predicted a victory margin of 12,000 to 15,000 votes and current trends are aligning with that estimate.

“The P.V. Anvar factor was present in the byelection and cannot be ruled out,” he told the media in Kannur.

Mr. Joseph acknowledged that Mr. Anvar had secured a significant number of votes in several areas, calling him a “minor factor” in the contest.

“We will examine whether any UDF votes shifted to Mr. Anvar. A person who has received so many votes cannot be disregarded,” he added.

‘No door permanently closed’

Asked about Mr. Anvar’s future association with the UDF, Mr. Joseph said “that will be discussed later. In politics, no door is permanently closed. Even closed doors can be opened if there is a will.”

He added that the electoral outcome in Nilambur reflected the “growing anti-government sentiment” among the public.
