The Hyderabad City Police apprehended 1,530 persons for indulging in eve-teasing and other objectionable activities during the pre-immersion Ganesh festivities held between September 14 and 23.
The arrests were made and preventive action taken by SHE Teams deployed at major Ganesh mandaps, crowded places and immersion routes, with special focus on the Khairatabad and Balapur Ganesh celebrations. According to police, 724 of those apprehended were counselled, warned and released after due verification while 48 were convicted.
The police also stepped up monitoring of social media platforms during the celebrations. The Cyber Crimes wing registered four cases after identifying videos on Instagram showing people engaging in dangerous activities on moving vehicles and public roads during Ganesh immersion processions.
In one case, a person was seen hanging and swinging underneath a tusker/ truck. Another case was registered after a person was seen dancing on a moving tusker/ truck while carrying a glass on his head. A third case involved minor children dancing on the edge/ top of a moving vehicle during a procession. In the fourth case, police booked a person for riding a two-wheeler dangerously on a public road while the pillion rider was wearing a large gorilla costume and interacting with members of the public.
Additionally, 25 special crime teams of the Central Crime Station were deployed as part of preventive policing arrangements during the festival. The teams conducted surveillance, checking, frisking and verification of 396 suspicious persons in and around the Tank Bund area.
Six persons were identified for further enquiry. Police said four of them were from Mylavaram/ Nuzvid in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh and had come to Hyderabad with an intention to commit property offences. One of them was found to have previous criminal history. The remaining two persons were from Hyderabad, including a rowdy-sheeter. Following inquiry, four persons were handed over to Lake police and two to Saifabad police for further action.
