Twenty-five women have been booked by Jayankondam police for blocking traffic at Kallathur near here on Tuesday.

The women were protesting against the summons served on 10 women, who took part in a protest held on January 9, demanding the shifting of two Tasmac outlets from Kallathur.

The two Tasmac outlets are operating in residential areas on North Extension Road at Kallathur near Jayankondam. Hence, local residents have been protesting for the past two years, demanding that they be shifted to another location. They claim that daily wage workers and youth in the village have been severely affected.

Urging the authorities to shift both outlets, about 200 staged a road blockade at Kallathur on February 9. Police and revenue officials, who came for talks, assured them that steps would be taken to shift the shops to another location. Later, the police summoned at least 10 women for questioning.

Upset by the police action, a large number of protestors, mostly women, staged a road blockade again at the same spot on Tuesday, obstructing traffic on Jayankondam-Vriddhachalam Highway. They raised slogans against the State government for registering a case and serving summons on women, who were making a genuine demand.

The police, who rushed to the spot, detained 25 people, mostly women, for disrupting the traffic. However, all of them were released subsequently. The Jayankondam police have registered a case against them.
