At least 40 passengers, including a child and some foreign nationals, who were travelling in a private omni-bus from Chennai to Nagercoil suffered multiple injuries when the bus hit a centre median and toppled on Sunday.
Police said the bus, which was crossing Viswasapuram, near Thovalai here, hit a centre median. The driver, who is said to have lost control of the vehicle, applied the brakes and the bus toppled.
In the impact, the passengers suffered injuries and the rescue operation took time as women and elders could not climb up easily from the vehicle.
Locals said the median had not been placed properly and vehicles had to slow down suddenly due to the narrow carriage space.
A crane had to be brought to the spot to tow the bus. Traffic on the stretch was hit for a few hours due to the accident.
Police said there were a few foreign nationals and they were taken to hospital for treatment. More than five ambulances from nearby locations were pressed into service.
Doctors at the Government Hospital said a child and three women were seriously injured and were under treatment.
Traffic police investigation revealed that the road was witnessing frequent accidents due to the centre median and suggested its relocation soon.
