87% of 24×7 water supply project in Coimbatore completed; pipeline work begins at major junctions

The Coimbatore Corporation has completed 87% of its 24×7 water supply project and has started laying main pipelines at key junctions, including Sungam Junction on Trichy Road.

Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran inspected the works on-site and instructed officials to complete the project while avoiding disruption to traffic and the public.

The ₹646.71-crore project covers all the 60 wards as per the pre-2011 city limits and includes the construction of 33 overhead tanks. Construction of 30 tanks is complete, and work on the remaining three is ongoing. Of the 75 km of feeder mains, 66.25 km have been laid, and 1,747.63 km out of 1,798 km of distribution pipelines have been completed.

So far, the Corporation has provided 1,41,062 household water connections, of which 95,947 receive 24×7 water supply.

Mr. Prabhakaran said around 600 metres of feeder mains are being laid at Sungam Junction to supply water to five overhead tanks—Sivaraman Nagar (24.2 lakh litres), Valliammal Layout (29.5 lakh litres), Puliyakulam (24 lakh litres), Lakshmi Mills Colony (27.5 lakh litres), and Nanjundapuram (2 lakh litres).

Pipeline work on Trichy Road is expected to be completed within a week, after which test runs will be conducted and roads restored.

The Corporation plans similar works at Lanka Corner Junction and the GP Signal in Gandhipuram, where pipelines are yet to be laid.
