The model of INS Nilgiri displayed in front of INS Agrani at Red Fields in Coimbatore

A model of INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth guided missile frigate, was unveiled at Red Fields in Coimbatore on Friday by Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar AVSM, VSM, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy.
The unveiling marks a significant milestone in promoting maritime awareness and inspiring the youth towards joining Navy.
The INS Nilgiri was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 15, 2025 at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. Designed and built indigenously, the warship represents India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Cmde Manmohan Singh, Commanding Officer, Agrani, senior officials from Army and Air Force and civil dignitaries from Coimbatore district.
Equipped with advance stealth technology, state-of-the-art weaponry, sophisticated sensors, radar systems, guided missiles and torpedoes, INS Nilgiri is capable of undertaking a wide spectrum of naval operations, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, anti-submarine warfare and safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
The ship model has been designed and built by Shivareddy of Ratnagiri, while the display platform has been constructed by Larsen & Toubro, Coimbatore.
