Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials uncovered a scam involving fake receipts during an inspection at the two-wheeler parking lot at Ramanathapuram new bus stand.
DVAC Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ramachandran and his team conducted a surprise raid at Ramanathapuram municipal office. Following that, they conducted an inspection at the two-wheeler parking lot at the new bus stand, which is operated by the municipality.
During the inspection, the DVAC officials found that money was being fraudulently collected from vehicle users by issuing fake receipts. Original receipts and fake receipts bearing same numbers were seized.
An inquiry is being conducted with five municipal officials in this connection.
It has been revealed that instead of using receipts printed at the government press, those manning the parking lot were issuing fake receipts, printed at a private press in Ramanathapuram, and collecting money from the vehicle users.
Further inquiries are under way.
Engineer, driver held
Similarly, the DVAC officials arrested a Municipal Engineer and his driver who allegedly took ₹2 lakh bribe in Manamadurai in Sivaganga district.
Contract works worth ₹4 crore were carried out in Manamadurai. To release the funds for the bills, Municipal Engineer Patturajan demanded ₹4 lakh bribe from contractor Vincent Raja. Patturajan demanded ₹2 lakh as the first instalment.
Vincent Raja lodged a complaint with the DVAC office in Sivaganga. As per the officials’ advice, he gave ₹2 lakh, coated with chemical powder, to Patturajan at the municipal office.
The DVAC officials, led by DSP Dharmaram, who were hiding there, caught Patturajan red-handed and arrested him. His driver Sethupathi, who helped him in receiving the bribe, was also arrested.
