Minister for Information Technology and Industries D. Sridhar Babu said fresh applications for data centres with a cumulative capacity of 12 gigawatts are under consideration by Telangana government.
The government is yet to take a call on the applications in view of their massive requirement of water and energy, the Minister said during his address at AI Infrastructure Summit of Microsoft, occasioning the launch of the company’s newest India South Central data centre region in the State at the Chandanvelly Industrial Park in Shabad mandal of Ranga Reddy district.
Already the State is hosting data centres with a combined capacity of 300 megawatts, with 2 gigawatt more in pipeline, Mr. Sridhar Babu said. The aim is to reach 5 GW and attract investments worth USD 30 billion by 2029, he said, while adding that the government is trying to harness ‘green power’ and recycled grey water for the energy and water intensive facilities.
He attributed the current vantage position of Hyderabad in AI & Cloud Computing to the ecosystem developed over three decades. The interest invoked in Global Capacity Centres owes itself to the huge talent pool the State has created over the years, he said.
Rajiv Kumar, managing director and president, Microsoft India Development Centre, spoke about the company’s initiatives for community development and sustainability, while praising Hyderabad for its ‘world class AI ready infrastructure’.
Mentioning that the new facility used zero water for cooling, he said the company is working with local communities towards groundwater recharging.
