Phase 2 projects of Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at Mangaluru Junction lay stress on passenger comfort, accessibility, and aesthetics

Phase 2 works of Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) which are fast-progressing at the Mangaluru Junction Railway Station have laid stress on passenger comfort, accessibility, aesthetics and modern station facilities.

A sleeping pod facility on the first floor has been completed, providing an additional accommodation facility for passengers. The porch pillar work has been completed.

Station façade improvement works, including cladding, are being executed. Extension of the station building is in progress.

The circulating area has undergone landscaping improvements, creating a more attractive and passenger-friendly environment. At Platforms 2 and 3, IRS-type platform shelters covering 11 bays are being provided. Six bays have already been completed, while roofing works are progressing on the remaining bays, the Palakkad Division of the Southern Railway said in a release.

The entrance arch structure has been completed, with painting works in progress, further enhancing the visual identity and entrance experience of the station. A compound wall along the approach road has also been completed. The extension of the station building roof towards the Netravathi End has been completed, improving weather protection and the overall appearance of the station.

Upgradation of the panel room, including cable concealment, wall cladding and flooring works, is also in progress. These improvements are aimed at providing a cleaner, safer and better-organised operational environment.

As part of the scheme’s emphasis on inclusive and accessible passenger facilities, dedicated Divyangjan parking, sinks and toilet facilities have been completed. A major six-metre-wide Foot over Bridge (FoB) is currently being constructed. It will provide improved connectivity and facilitate smoother movement of passengers within the station. Lifts at Platforms 1 and 2 are also being provided, with foundation and structural fabrication works completed.

In addition, reconstruction and repair works of Platform Numbers 2 and 3 are in progress, further strengthening the passenger infrastructure and improving the overall condition and functionality of the platforms.

The ongoing redevelopment at Mangaluru Junction brings together modern passenger amenities, improved circulation, enhanced accessibility, upgraded operational infrastructure and significant improvements in station aesthetics. With the works being implemented in a phased manner, the redevelopment is set to substantially improve the overall passenger experience and transform Mangaluru Junction into a more modern, accessible, comfortable and passenger-friendly railway station, while further strengthening its role as an important railway gateway to the coastal region of Karnataka, the Southern Railway said.

Phase 1 projects

Under Phase 1 of the ABSS works, substantial improvements have been undertaken to upgrade the existing station infrastructure. The porch and façade of the station building have been improved, giving the station a more welcoming and modern appearance. Development of the circulating area, provision of Automated Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), improvement of the booking office with modern display boards, and construction of a new waiting hall building are among the major passenger-oriented facilities taken up under the scheme.

Meanwhile, this station will come under South Western Railway from October 1.
