A special security related meeting was held at the Tiruchi International Airport on Thursday in the wake of the incident involving a Tel Aviv-bound flydubai flight from Dubai after the captain of the aircraft was allegedly stabbed by the co-pilot forcing the passengers to intervene as the flight began to plunge mid-air before making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.
The nearly 40-minute meeting at the airport was attended by senior officials of the Airports Authority of India, various airlines, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and other stakeholders. Airport sources said a host of security-related issues and steps were discussed in detail by stakeholders at the meeting.
Sources said Tiruchi is the second busiest international airport next only to Chennai in Tamil Nadu in respect of international passenger traffic. Overseas flights by different airlines are operated to select overseas destinations in South Asia, South East Asia and West Asia such as Colombo, Jaffna, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
The Tiruchi airport has been classified as sensitive and is guarded round-the-clock by the CISF personnel in shifts. The airport comes under the jurisdiction of the Tiruchi City Police, who take care of security on the city-side of the sprawling airport.
