Uma Maheswari (28) wife of Suresh Kumar had given birth to a male baby on September 22 at the government hospital in Karaikudi in Sivaganga district. Hence, she was eligible for the one gram of gold ring as per the announcement made by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
The young mother received the token as well from the authorities and when she went to the GH, she was disappointed as the officials claimed that the system rejected her application on ‘technical grounds’.
Speaking to reporters, she said that after her marriage, she has been living in Mysuru with her husband Suresh Kumar, who is employed there.
She said that her parents – Arumugam and Latha – lived in Kazhani Vaasal near Karaikudi. She was with her mother for the last six months for her second delivery and that her first child was delivered in the Government Hospital in Karaikudi.
Now, Uma Maheswari said she visited the Primary Health Centre at Muthupattinam for regular screening for the last five to six months and had delivered her second baby in the GH at Karaikudi last month.
Though she furnished the token and other documents, the officials asked for her Aadhaar card, which had Mysuru address. Hence, she was denied the gift.
“I am living in Mysuru and hence I have my Aadhaar card with the address in Mysuru. What stops the officials from issuing the government’s gift to me, when I had delivered my child in the GH,” she asked.
However, officials said that they would seek clarity from the higher officials and inform the beneficiary in a day or two.
