A major fire broke out at two adjoining furniture shops near Medchal checkpost in the wee hours of Sunday (October 4), destroying furniture and other material stored inside the establishments.

The Fire Department received the call at 1.22 a.m., following which two fire tenders, one each from Shamirpet and Jeedimetla fire stations, were rushed to the spot.

The blaze is suspected to have started in one of the furniture shops before rapidly spreading to the adjoining establishment. Thick smoke from the shops alerted residents and passers-by, who informed the fire control room.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about an hour before bringing it under control. No injuries or casualties were reported. A large quantity of furniture and other goods was destroyed in the fire, though officials were yet to assess the value of the damage.

Police also reached the spot and began an inquiry. Preliminary findings indicated that an electrical short circuit could have triggered the fire, but the exact cause was yet to be established by police and fire officials.
