Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran has claimed that a few Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councillors tried to attack him on Thursday (October 8, 2026).
On Thursday afternoon, 27 DMK councillors met the Mayor in his chamber at the Corporation’s office. At that time, a verbal duel broke out between the DMK councillors. Information spread that DMK councillors attacked each other and some tried to attack the Mayor as well. At first, the councillors denied the incident. Later, the mayor confirmed the event.
Speaking to The Hindu, theMayor said, “Last month, a few councillors led by me met DMK president M.K. Stalin regarding the privatisation of the drinking water supply and the proposed waste-to-energy project in Salem Corporation,”. The DMK councillors also staged a protest in the Corporation last month.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, a few DMK councillors came to the office and questioned how the Mayor met the party president without the knowledge of the district unit. “Few councillors used unparliamentary words, and two DMK councillors, A. Tamilarasan and M.R. Santhamoorthy, allegedly tried to attack me, but other councillors prevented them. As this is a party internal issue, I decided not to lodge a complaint with the police and to take the issue to the party high command,” The Mayor added.
When contacted, councillor Santhamoorthy was unavailable for comments.
