Kallakurichi District Collector J.E. Padmaja has directed officials to inspect flood-prone areas and relief shelters, keep rescue equipment ready and establish round-the-clock control rooms ahead of northeast monsoon.

Chairing a review meeting at the Collectorate, she instructed Revenue Divisional Officers and zonal officers to inspect vulnerable locations in advance. The line departments were also asked to submit details of damages to the Department of Disaster Management to facilitate relief assistance without delay.

The meeting reviewed the functioning of rain gauges, areas vulnerable to flooding, locations affected by previous cyclones, and precautionary measures to be taken. Officials also assessed cyclone shelters, accommodation for people evacuated during heavy rain, water storage in dams and availability of safety equipment.

Ms. Padmaja asked officials to continuously monitor low-lying villages during rain and prepare an inventory of generators, earthmovers and tree-cutting equipment, keeping them ready for deployment. Control rooms should function round-the-clock at Revenue Divisional Offices and all taluk offices, she said.

Residents were advised not to tether livestock to electricity poles and to ensure that cattle sheds do not come into contact with electrical wires. They were also cautioned against drying wet clothes on electrical wires.

Residents can report rain-related damage and other information to the Collectorate’s disaster management control room on 04141-228801 or the toll-free number 1077.
