A cement statue of former Chief Minister and AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran was damaged by unidentified persons in Avaniyapuram, Madurai, on Sunday (October 5, 2025) night.
The four-foot statue had been installed on a pedestal near the Jallikattu venue in Avaniyapuram. Locals found that the statue, which was installed in 1990, had fallen from the three-foot-high pedestal and had broken.
The police said that an iron fence had been erected around the statue. However, the door had not been locked. Some miscreants had pushed down the statue, causing damage to it, the police added.
AIADMK members, led by party district secretary and Tirupparankundram MLA V.V. Rajan Chellappa, gathered at the spot, and another similar statue was brought to Avaniyapuram and installed on the same pedestal.
The Avaniyapuram police are investigating the case.
