The Telangana government on Wednesday (December 17) issued a health advisory cautioning residents against the spread of seasonal flu, following forecasts of dry weather and a drop in minimum temperatures across the State.

According to the advisory issued by Dr B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted dry weather conditions over Telangana for the next 5 days, with minimum temperatures likely to remain below normal by 2°C to 3°C at isolated locations. The advisory warned that lower environmental temperatures could lead to an increase in acute respiratory infections, including seasonal flu.

Seasonal flu is described as an acute and highly contagious respiratory infection marked by symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body ache and fatigue. It spreads easily from person to person through coughing or sneezing. “Most people recover on their own within a week if they rest at home and consume adequate fluids,” the advisory said.

The advisory said vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children under five years, senior citizens above 65 years of age and individuals with chronic medical conditions face a higher risk of severe illness. These groups have been advised to consult a doctor if they develop flu-like symptoms.

People experiencing warning signs such as high fever, breathing difficulty, bluish discoloration of the skin or lips, blood in sputum or altered behaviour have been urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest government health facility without delay.

The advisory listed several dos and don’ts for the public. These include covering the mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing, frequent handwashing with soap and water, avoiding public places when symptomatic, drinking sufficient water, eating nutritious food, ensuring adequate ventilation in indoor spaces and getting enough sleep.

“As part of precautionary measures, the government has made elaborate arrangements by providing special beds and essential medicines at all the public health facilities,” the advisory said.
