The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has carried out over 4,000 inspections across the city in the past month, as part of an intensified drive to curb illegal water and sewerage connections, officials said on Monday.
The special task force, known as the ‘Blue Force’, detected and acted against hundreds of unauthorised connections during the month-long operation, which, the BWSSB said, were contributing to revenue losses and reduced water pressure in several areas.
The teams inspected 237 buildings across four zones and disconnected 70 illegal water connections in a single day, on December 20.
The south zone recorded the highest number of violations, with 33 illegal connections disconnected from 61 buildings. This was followed by the east zone, where 18 connections were severed, and the west zone, which saw 15 disconnections. In the north zone, the authorities disconnected four illegal connections, out of 44 buildings.
BWSSB Chairman V. Ram Prasath Manohar said the task force was formed to identify connections that bypass official meters or operate without approval.
Highlighting that the drive would continue until every drop was accounted for, Mr. Manohar said the board was increasingly using data-based inputs to identify areas with a high likelihood of violations. He warned that properties found with illegal water or sewerage connections would face not only disconnection but also penalties and legal action, particularly in cases involving bypass lines or unauthorised sanitary connections.
