In a move aimed at bringing relief to pedestrians, the Highways Department will construct a foot overbridge (FOB) at the Madhya Kailash junction in Adyar.
The facility was planned when the proposal for the flyover at the junction was drawn up. An FOB on Rajiv Gandhi Salai near the junction was dismantled to facilitate the construction of the flyover.
The design of the 127-m-long and 5.5-m-wide pedestrian facility is being vetted by experts from IIT-Madras. Sources in the Highways Department said the junction witnesses 1,510 pedestrians per hour during rush hour, which means at least 10,000 pedestrians cross it every day.
“People find it very difficult to cross the road since traffic is quite heavy on both the arterial roads. If the traffic police are present, they stop the vehicles to allow the people to cross the road. Otherwise, we are at the mercy of motorists,” said Surendra, who often travels to Taramani.
The FOB would allow pedestrians near KV CLRI School to reach Kasturibai Nagar MRTS station, or get to the bus stop near Madhya Kailash temple on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, or walk to the bus stop near the Regional Labour Institute on Sardar Patel Road. All three entry/exit points will have escalators and elevators.
An official source said they had written to the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority, seeking permission to connect the FOB with the MRTS station.
