One person was killed in a multiple-vehicle collision in the city on Thursday.
On Thursday around 10.30 p.m., a lorry headed to Salem from Omalur stopped without fuel at the Mamangam flyover on the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway. The lorry driver went to a nearby petrol bunk to buy diesel. At that time, due to poor light on the flyover, a ghee-loaded lorry that was heading to Bengaluru rammed the rear of the lorry.
In the accident, the lorry driver, Gopi (25) of Negamam in Tiruppur district, sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot.
Meanwhile, a tempo van hit the rear of the ghee-loaded lorry. The diesel tank of the van caught fire before which all the 10 passengers of the van came out. The tempo van was gutted.
On information, the Suramangalam fire and rescue service rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. The Suramangalam police sent the body to Salem Government Hospital for post-mortem. The police registered a case and are investigating further. Traffic movement was affected in the flyover for over two hours due to the accident.
