Six minors and two adults were admitted to a de-addiction centre after testing positive for marijuana consumption following a complaint lodged by the mother of one of them with the Telangana EAGLE Force through its toll-free helpline, 1908.

The incident was reported in the Cyberabad limits on October 6, when the woman contacted the EAGLE Force seeking assistance for her son and his minor friends, who had become addicted to drugs.

Acting on the complaint, EAGLE Force officials identified eight drug consumers, including six minors, and a suspected drug peddler. All eight consumers tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana, and were admitted to a de-addiction centre.

The suspected peddler was identified as Nukadvala Tushal, 21, a vegetable/flower seller residing in Fatehnagar, Hyderabad. Cases were registered at the Jeedimetla and Sanathnagar police stations under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act.

The EAGLE Force said it had been receiving an increasing number of calls from parents seeking assistance for children involved in substance abuse. While welcoming their willingness to seek help despite the social stigma associated with drug addiction, officials expressed concern over the growing number of complaints involving minors.

The government has also issued standard operating procedures for establishing Addiction Treatment Facilities at 35 government teaching hospitals across Telangana to provide treatment and counselling under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

Officials urged parents to report suspected drug abuse among children through the EAGLE Force helpline, 1908, and seek timely counselling and treatment.
