GUWAHATI:

About 76% of some 19.05 lakh electors voted for the bypoll to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in central Assam on Tuesday (October 6, 2026).

State election officials said the final voting percentage was expected to rise as people who entered polling stations before 5 p.m. were allowed to exercise their franchise.

The bypoll was necessitated after Pradyut Bordoloi, who won the constituency for the second successive term in 2024, quit Congress to contest and win the Dispur Assembly seat on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

Fifteen candidates are vying for the Nagaon parliamentary constituency, which comprises eight Assembly segments in Morigaon and Nagaon districts. However, the contest is expected to be primarily among the BJP’s Devasish Sharma, a former bureaucrat; Congress’s Sibamoni Bora, a former MLA; and All India United Democratic Front chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal, an MLA and three-time former MP.

All three exuded confidence about winning the seat.

Barring a minor confrontation over alleged vote-switching at a polling booth in Nagaon district’s Juria, the polling process was largely peaceful.

Opposition party leaders, including Mr Ajmal and the Congress’s Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain, alleged that unidentified people entered several polling stations. The latter also accused the BJP of having tried to rig the election.

The counting of votes is scheduled for October 9.
