The unprecedented manner in which the GenZ rose up to react against the system and the manner in which it took the entire nation with it has has restored the nation’s self confidence, A Vijayaraghavan, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and president of All India Agricultural Workers’ Union, said here on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, along with the general secretary of AIAWU, B. Venkat, he said that across the world, globalisation and its fall out has had the GenZ in turmoil.
The students came out in such huge numbers, capturing the imagination of the entire youth community because their faith in the system’s ability to conduct competitive exams in a fair manner — which is the one ticket to affordable higher education in the country — had been shaken repeatedly. But the Centre handled the students’ sentiments in a very careless manner, Mr.Vijayaraghavan said
GenZ’s protest at Jantar Manthar and their refusal to back down under pressure was a solid answer to those passive sections of society who have come to believe that such protests do not achieve anything. The relevance of public agitations to highlight people’s issues remains as important as ever, he added
In fact, the students’ protest has been a source of massive encouragement to the Left parties who are preparing to get together farmers and workers to rise in protest against the Centre’s anti-farmer policies and its policy of weakening the national food security and public distribution system, Mr. Vijayaraghavan said.
He said that the Centre, by reducing the role of Food Corporation of India in procurement and storage of food grains and by allowing 25% of the FCI godowns to be operated by Adani and other private players, was failing the farmers and risking giving away the control over the nation’s food security.
The AIAWU would be leading a massive protest of farmers and farm workers in August.
Referring to the State’s Assembly election outcome which was discussed by the CPI(M) in detail, Mr. Vijayaraghavan said that the party was reviewing all aspects of the election results. He claimed that the Left Government had improved the quality of people’s lives through good governance and improved public services. But the party failed to get the support of the masses, for which there were various reasons, he said.
