The Kozhikode Revenue Divisional Officer has imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on a food-based establishment for allegedly manufacturing and distributing fried snacks in unhygienic conditions.

Food Safety officials recently found the premises, where around 15 workers were employed, severely unhygienic during an inspection. The establishment manufactures fried snacks and supplies them to hotels, bakeries, and cool bars in the city and surrounding areas. Its operations were subsequently suspended after officials found the premises unfit for food preparation.

Food Safety Officer (Kozhikode South Circle) Jithin Raj filed the case against the establishment for reportedly manufacturing and distributing food products under conditions considered hazardous to public health.

According to officials, such establishments are required to comply with Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards regulations. The Total Polar Compounds (TPC) level in cooking oil should not exceed 25%, they said.

As part of ‘Operation Thelima’, the department recently inspected 201 establishments in the district and seized and destroyed 238 litres of used cooking oil deemed unfit for reuse.
