Tamil Nadu State president of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Nellai Mubarak said decisions regarding electoral alliances would be finalised only during the party’s general body meeting in January 2026.

Speaking in a press conference here at the SDPI’s women’s wing conference on Saturday, he asserted their stand against BJP and described it as a ‘divisive force’ in India.

He added BJP’s ‘religious politics would never succeed in Tamil Nadu as the people of the State who were intellectually evolved would prioritise social justice and communal harmony over Gujarat or Bihar-style politics.

Regarding the recent ‘Deepam’ controversy at the Thirupparankundram temple, he supported the continuation of traditional practices and commended the government’s actions in maintaining law and order against those attempting to incite religious division.

He raised concerns over the removal of 97.37 lakh voters in Tamil Nadu from the current list and added, “A disproportionate number of those removed are women, so, I urged the State government and the Election Commission to immediately re-verify these deletions.”

As part of the conference, Mr. Mubarak said they urge the Tamil Nadu government to effectively implement the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act to ensure better safety for women.

Following States like Bihar and Karnataka, he demanded that the Tamil Nadu government provide 12 days of paid menstrual leave annually for women working in the private sector.

“I strongly condemn the act of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who asked a Muslim woman doctor to remove her hijab while receiving her appointment order,” he stated.
