Annamalai held with 500 supporters in Tiruppur for taking part in protest ‘without permission’

Former State president of BJP K. Annamalai was arrested in Tiruppur on Thursday along with about 500 supporters for taking part in a demonstration, without official consent, demanding withdrawal of police cases against the residents of Iduvai village on December 16 when they attempted to block the garbage-laden lorries of Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation from emptying the wastes in their locality.

The police had refused permission for the protest in front of the Tiruppur Kuamran Statue.

Addressing Iduvai residents and supporters, Mr. Annamalai said the police, by refusing permission for a peaceful protest, was throttling democratic rights of people. The police department has, however, failed in protecting women and children from harassment.

The protest of the public will rather be intensified street-wise. The police department was executing flawed directives of the government.

Tiruppur Mayor N. Dinesh Kumar was letting the garbage to accumulate with an eye on “commission” (from private entities handling disposal), Mr. Annamalai alleged.
